There is a blue that doesn't exist in any tube.

Schibli mixed it himself — pigment by pigment, test by test — until it held a depth no manufacturer's blue could reach. Not indigo, not cobalt, not navy. Something between all three, and older than any of them.

He named the painting after a unicorn. Not the storybook kind — the constellation, faint and easy to miss unless you know exactly where to look. A creature made of stars that most people walk past without noticing.

That's what Monocerus asks of you. Not a glance. A look.

The gold frame doesn't announce the painting — it holds it, the way a reliquary holds something it isn't trying to explain. Inside, the blue does the work: pooling, thinning, refusing to resolve into a single shade no matter how long you stand there.

This is the flagship of the Guardian Series for a reason. Everything the series is reaching for — protection, patience, presence — is already here, fully formed, in 170 by 150 centimetres of paint that took years to become just one colour.
