Part of Schibli's Alchemy series within Cosmic Syntax, this work layers gold metal leaf beneath passages of acrylic and epoxy, built up until the surface catches light the way old manuscripts once held gold script — a material echo of transformation rather than an illustration of it.

The alchemists never sought gold for its own sake; they used the metal as a symbol for what could be refined out of raw matter. Cosmic Syntax 142 works the same way in paint: layers are built, sealed, and interrupted until a geometry of gesture emerges beneath the gold, present but never fully resolved.
