Apate is named after the Greek spirit of deceit and guile — the force that unravels what seems fixed. This work sits within Schibli's Cosmic Syntax series: spontaneous, gestural passages of acrylic pigment applied without a predetermined outcome, where the surface itself becomes the record of the process rather than an illustration of a subject.
Read against its mythological namesake, the painting resists easy reading — colour and gesture shift the longer it's observed, refusing a single fixed interpretation. Each viewer completes the work through their own perception, which is the intention behind the piece.
