Ten metres.

Say it out loud and it still doesn't quite land until you're standing in front of it. Persephone is not a painting you look at from across a room — there is no distance far enough to take in the whole of it at once. You have to walk.

She was the goddess who lived two lives — half the year below, half above, neither state permanent, both of them true. This canvas doesn't illustrate that myth. It performs it. Colour and gesture shift as you move along its length, so that what you see at one end has already changed by the time you reach the other. No single viewing is the same painting twice.

It wasn't made for a living room. It was made for the kind of space where a person can actually walk the full ten metres and feel the painting change around them — a lobby, a gallery, a hallway built for exactly this.

Most paintings ask to be seen. This one asks to be walked through.
