Art in a Square: 30 × 30 cm at Galerie Immaginazione
What happens when thirty artists with completely different hands are given the same boundary? That is the question behind the group exhibition «Kunst im Quadrat» (Art in a Square) at Galerie Immaginazione in Brugg, Switzerland. Each artist shows two works, every work measures exactly 30 × 30 cm and sits in an identical steel frame.
One format, sixty answers
My paintings usually come out of a single body movement, often on large canvases laid on the studio floor. A 30 cm square asks for the opposite: compression. For this exhibition I am painting two new works that hold the vocabulary of Cosmic Syntax in the smallest possible space. Signs, gold and gesture, concentrated on a surface you can hold in two hands.
That is what makes the show compelling: once size is no longer an argument, only conviction remains. Sixty works side by side, the same size, the same frame, and each one still speaks its own language.
